NoMa Condo builds around Geylang terraced houses because owners refuse to sell

NoMa is an upcoming luxury condominium development in Geylang, which is built around terraced houses after their owners denied to sell their freehold properties. That makes NoMa Condo become to be a special development with a unique form.

NoMa Condo developer had purchased five units to develop the project

NoMa Residences is a freehold development slated to be completed in 2023. There are over five two-storey terrace houses were bought by property developer Macly Group to build the freehold residential development NoMa. There are four terrace houses were along Guillemard Road, and one was along Lorong 28 Geylang. The residential units were: 331, 333, 335, 339 Guillemard Road and 56 Lorong 28 Geylang respectively. Because two houses at 337 Guillemard Road and 54 Lorong 28 Geylang refused to dislodge, however, this is roughly the plot of land they have (dotted lines mark out the Lorong 28 unit that refused to sell)

Owners who refuse to sell terrace houses to build NoMa Condo at Lorong 28 Geylang

According to Shin Min Daily News, there is unclear reason why the owner refuses to sell the place. Currently, the first floor of the house is a temple hall, and the second floor is the temple caretaker's accommodation. The caretaker told the Shin Min that the construction of the development doesn't affect her unit much, and the temple hall is only open for friends and relatives of the owner. Approval was given by URA to redevelop these houses in 2018.

House owner at Guillemard Road

The owners said that the house at 337 Guillemard Road was bought by their mother. After she pass away, Mr. Wu, the 60-year-old hawker lives with his elder sister. Mr. Wu said that the land site in front of the house has been turned into a garden, where he rears fish and small birds. A few years ago, the developers had approached him to regard selling his house but he declined because such freehold houses are rare nowadays. He also said that he can tend to his plants in his garden and he won't sell the house for any price.
